    ASO Advice: Infoseek, the most popular search engine, can be used for any search. Choose Altavista, the critics choice, for expanded searches or Excite for subject-oriented searches. Opentext allows you to search only the headings or titles while Hotbot includes advanced options. Use Webcrawler for simple topics and Magellan for family-oriented content. To search up to 20 engines at once, use a Meta-Index. Add Sheet Online also offers over 200 other search engines in 12 categories.

    Click in the search box, and type a few words, a Proper Name, or a full question that describes what you want to find. Open the pop up menu, where it says the Web to select an alternate source for searching. Then click Search. Be sure to capitalize names and titles, use quotation marks to group words as a phrase, put a plus sign (+) in front of words that must be in documents, and put a minus sign (-) in front of words that should not be in any documents found by the search. Do not put a space between the - or + sign and the word.

Retrieve results from each search engine.
    Enter keywords related to your information need in the box labeled Query. Small words (i.e., the, it, for, etc.) are typically ignored, but you can use numbers and most symbols. There is no need to insert AND & OR between words as this is done automatically, depending upon your selection of all query terms, as a phrase, or any query term. Currently, there is no option for case sensitivity or specification of words you specifically do not want in your results.

ALTAVISTA: Search and Display the Results
    Use the word AND between words that both must be in a document. Use OR between words where either can be in the document. To exclude documents from your search, write AND NOT before the word. Capatalize proper nouns.

    Excite should be used for subject oriented searches, where you are unsure of keywords. It will retrieve documents that are about the search terms you use, rather that all pages that contain the words you type. See our advice for other search engines.

    Capatalize proper nouns. Remember that it's not necessary to make your query grammatically correct. Words like the, a, those, and these are ignored. Check your spelling -- even a small error might affect your search results. If you find a site in your results list that you like and want Excite to find other sites similar to it, click on More Like This, which you'll find next to the URL.

    Watch your spelling! If you type computr instead of computer, the Open Text Index won't find many matches. Use plurals, or other word endings. Search for both British and American spellings.

WEBCRAWLER: Search the web and show for results
    To use WebCrawler's Search feature, you just need to be able to describe what you're looking for with a series of words or a phrase. Type those words into the search box, and click on the Search button.

MAGELLAN: Search for:
rated and reviewed sites only entire database green light sites only
    Just enter one or more words in the Search text box and click on Search. It doesn't matter whether you use capital or lowercase letters. If you want to search only those sites which the Magellan editorial team has rated and reviewed, click the button marked rated and reviewed sites only. If you want to search the entire database, click the button marked entire database. If you want to search only those sites appropriate for children, choose green light sites only. If you enter a minus sign in front of a search word, Magellan will exclude that word from the documents it returns. If you place a plus sign in front of a search word, you are asking Magellan to make sure that all documents returned include the word. Do not leave any space between the + or - symbol and the word.
